The Rose Garden Sheik Sa’adi Shirazi 1258 CE
10th July 2026
This week we have been reading a landmark of Persian literature by one of the greatest medieval Persian poets, Sa’adi. This is one of his most popular books; deeply influential in both the West and the East. It is a collection of poems and stories recognised as a significant source of wisdom from Sufi Teachings.
The book explores virtually every major issue faced by humankind offering guidance with humour, depth and uncanny pertinence to modern day life.
In Persia, a rose garden symbolizes earthly paradise, divine love, and spiritual enlightenment. Cultivated for thousands of years, these enclosed, geometrically designed spaces represent a microcosm of heaven on earth, as well as symbolising significant themes in life:
- In Sufism, the seeker must navigate through life's trials (the rose's thorns) to reach union with Divine (the rose)
- Because of its brief blooming season, the rose represents the fleeting nature of worldly existence, encouraging detachment from material attachments
- The enduring poetic pairing of the rose and the nightingale symbolizes the yearning Lover (the bird) seeking the beauty and truth of the Beloved (the flower)
We invite you to enter The Rose Garden with us and discover its treasures. In addition, find a place to sit in the midst of the rose’s blooming season and be transported to Paradise and the Heart of Love.
